Memorial Grove

Children’s AIDS Memorial Grove

The idea of a Children’s AIDS Memorial Grove grew out of the sorrow of a Rise n’ Shine brother and sister whose father died of AIDS-related complications.  They wanted a living memorial, a tree that would grow and stand tall to remind them of their memories.  Others who had lost parents or siblings to AIDS had the same longing – a place to remember, a symbol of their loss.

On September 1, 2005 fifteen children stood together and dedicated their “trees to the courage and strength of those who lost their fight against AIDS, trees that serve to remind them of the love, laughter, and memories that are still alive in spirit.”  Following the memorial ceremony in September, one teen reflected on the feelings of all – “I finally have a sense of closure.  I also have a place to go and remember.”

The Memorial Grove is being created surrounding the outdoor chapel at our summer camp on the shores of Lake Wenatchee.  Trees will be planted every fall.  There are currently 111 Rise n’ Shine children eligible to plant memorial trees.  Donations can be sent to Rise n’ Shine’s Children’s AIDS Memorial Grove fund.  Writings and art for the children can also be sent to Rise n’ Shine.
